Samira Ibrahim, the Egyptian political activist who tweeted several antisemitic and anti-American statements, as well as a quote from Adolf Hitler over the years, was due to receive the International Women of Courage Award from the US State Department this Friday. According to State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland, her award has now been deferred, pending further investigation, following the attention that was drawn to her controversial tweets. “We, as a department, became aware very late in the process about Samira Ibrahim’s alleged public comments. In conversations with us in the last 24 hours, Ms. Ibrahim has categorically denied authorship. She asserts that she was hacked. But we need some time, and in order to be prudent, to conduct our own review,” Nuland said.

In her first public comments in response to the decision of the State Department, Ibrahim tweeted “I refuse to apologize to the Zionist lobby in America regarding my previous anti-Zionist statements under pressure from American government therefore they withdrew the award.”

Earlier Ibrahim claimed on Twitter that the offensive tweets were not posted by her, but that her twitter account was hacked. A Times of Israel blogger pointed out some technical details that indicate that her claim is unlikely to be accurate.
