Jewish boxer Yuri Foreman proved triumphant Thursday night, beating Gundrick King by unanimous decision in a six-round junior middleweight match-up . Scorecards read 60-54 across the board. One boxing blog explained: “King had no answer for the adept footwork and sly defense of Foreman.”

“I fought in January, my first after a tw0-year layoff and I felt rusty. This fight I felt much better,” Foreman told The Algemeiner.

In late January the former world champion defeated Brandon Baue in another six-round  unanimous decision with a final score that also read 60-54.

“I chose the path to go one step at a time, in smaller steps. I’m starting with six rounds, my next fight eight rounds and then ten rounds,” Foreman said.

Foreman, who was born in Belarus but who calls Brooklyn, New York home, won the WBA super welterweight title in 2009 before relinquishing it the following year in a loss to Miquel Cotto, in a fight that some him aggravate a knee injury. He says he hopes to get back into the ring for another fight in the next few months and that his trainer was happy with Thursday night’s result.

“He was satisfied. I was gradually getting stronger and stronger with each round and stuck to our game plan we worked on during training.”

Foreman, an observant Jew, is studying to be a rabbi.
