Israel is celebrating Jerusalem Day today to commemorate the liberation and reunification of the city during the Six Day War. In honor of the day, the Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive released a list of films that commemorate the city and the event—for those who don’t mind marking the holiday on the couch.
1. Jerusalem My City (1950) – This film takes place during the period when Jerusalem was declared the capital of Israel resulting in the transfer of Israel’s national institutions from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Includes lovely scenes of buildings and streets in the city center, some of which are still preserved today.
2. Jerusalem Is Mine (1967) – Jerusalem through the eyes of five of its residents, including poet Yehuda Amichai.
3. Return To Mount Scopus (1967) – The restoration of the Mount Scopus campus of the Hebrew University following the Six Day War. Also includes the awarding of honoring doctorates to President Zalman Shazar and IDF Chief-of-Staff Yitzhak Rabin.
4. The Price of Peace: Joint Palestine Appeal Emergency Fund (1967) – Includes the recapture of the Old City of Jerusalem during the Six Day War.
5. The Walls Of Jerusalem (1970) – A historical account of the walls and gates surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem.
