A U.S. naval carrier is making a rare visit to Eilat.
The USS Kearsarge arrived in the city’s port on Tuesday, the first time a U.S. naval ship has docked there in 14 years. European ships often visit the port but such visits by U.S. ships are few-and-far-between.
Haaretz reported that the ship brings with it 4,000 sailors, along with helicopters and other equipment. The carrier will stay there until Saturday. The Israeli navy will host the American sailors, and has planned organized tours throughout the country.
The Navy News service wrote on its website: “While in port, the officers, Sailors and Marines will meet with local officials, participate in community engagement projects and experience the rich history and culture of the region.
“This visit is not associated with, nor a reaction to, any world events.”
