Good thing for NBA superstar LeBron James that he plays in an era when Jewish representation in the league is confined to basketball’s front offices. Were it still the era of Jewish NBA pioneers like Lennie Rosenbluth and Art Heyman, James, who is getting married on Yom Kippur this weekend, might not as easily get away with his conflicted scheduling.

Luckily for him, Miami Heat teammate Dwayne Wade as well as NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul, will be in attendance, The New York Post reports.

In fact, The Post says that James’s interest in cutting his invitation list down from thousands of prospective guests to a number more manageable, will be helped by the Jewish holiday. However, by most standards the party will still be large, with attendance expected to “still number in the hundreds.”

James has maintained unexpected relationships with members of the Jewish community. In 2010, he was reported to have consulted with Rabbi Yishayahu Yosef Pinto, an Israeli rabbi and kabbalist who does not speak English, on an offshore yacht.  In 2009, James nominated Jay Schottenstein, an Ohio businessman and philanthropist who funded ArtScroll’s  Talmud  translation, for TIME Magazine’s TIME 100 list of most influential people.

James is set to marry his high school sweetheart, Savannah Brinson, in a high-security ceremony at a secret location still unknown to the media. The pair got engaged on New Year’s Eve two years ago, and have two children, LeBron Jr. and Bryce.
