Syria’s use of chemical weapons may further erode whatever stability remains in the Middle East and entangle Congress in a bitter dispute over whether to take military action against the country, but most American citizens are decidedly less concerned with the issue than their representatives in government, according to a new Gallup poll.
The poll, taken earlier this month, shows that only 8% of Americans believe the conflict and possible strike by the U.S. military is the most important issue currently facing the country. The economy remains the most significant issue facing Americans for 21% of respondents, followed by 17% who say jobs, 16% government, and 10% healthcare.
Congress has been debating the merits of a strike on Syria over the last week after it was determined the Syrian government used chemical weapons against its own citizens late last month. A congressional vote was postponed after Russia presented a plan to place Syria’s chemical weapons under international supervision.
U.S. President Barack Obama delivered a televised address on Tuesday night, touting the merits of a strike on Syria, while also saying that the U.S. welcomed efforts at a diplomatic solution.
