The father of Shlomi Cohen, the IDF soldier who was shot and killed earlier this week on the Lebanese border by a Lebanon army sniper, has dismissed Arab media claims about the incident.
The Al Arabiya news network, quoting a Lebanese website on Thursday, claimed that Hassan Adel Ibrahim – the soldier who shot and killed Cohen – carried out the shooting after identifying an Israeli civilian vehicle suspiciously approaching the border fence. According to Ibrahim, Cohen then demanded to be allowed to cross the border into Lebanese territory.
The fallen soldier’s father, Yossi Cohen, called the claim “…a complete lie.”
“Shlomi was driving on a trail that was nowhere near the border fence. There is no possible way for him to have crossed the border,” he said in an interview with Israeli daily Ma’ariv.
Cohen, 31, from the northern town of Afula, was killed near the town of Rosh Hanikra, on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, while traveling in a non-military vehicle at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.
According to Ibrahim’s brother, Hassan should be awarded a medal.”Soon the case will become clear and everyone will see that he is a national hero,” added the Lebanese soldier’s brother.
