Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency said on Friday that Russian President Valdimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani spoke on the telephone on Thursday about “bolstering and reinvigorating of the two states’ bilateral ties and cooperation in various spheres.” Their conversation was also a lead story on Iran’s PressTV, the regime’s semi-official state television channel.
Unlike with Putin’s telephone conversations with U.S. President Barack Obama, the military situation in Ukraine and the Crimea was not on the official agenda, according to Fars.
Fars said Putin “referred to the positive and constructive role played by Iran in the nuclear negotiations with the six world powers,” and quoted him as saying, “We do all our best so that the Iranian nuclear issue would lead to positive a final result.”
Putin also invited Rouhani to take part in the Caspian Sea Littoral Countriesˈ Summit, scheduled to be held in Astrakhan, in September.
Fars said Rouhani “praised Russia for its positive role in the nuclear negotiations within the Iran-powersˈ talks” as one of the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany, and said to Putin, “We will spend all-out efforts aimed at further development of economic cooperation between the two countries.”
“We should adopt measures to implement the already signed agreements as soon as possible and move through that phase into a phase of more important moves in the two counties’ relations,” Rouhani said.
