High Street Retailer Topman Apologizes for Jacket Featuring Nazi SS Insignia

High street fashion house Topman has apologized after a shopper discovered that a jacket sold by the company featured a Nazi SS emblem, Britain’s Daily Mail reported on Sunday.
The $343 denim hoodie, from the company’s ‘Horace’ range, included an imprint of the Odal rune, the insignia worn by members of Hitler’s 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen.
The SS division operated during World War II in the Nazi Germany-sponsored Independent State of Croatia. It was notorious for its cruelty and committed major atrocities in Niksic in Montenegro, where it slaughtered, tortured and burned its victims to death, according to the report.
The jacket, which the company said was made by an outside supplier, was only available on the retailer’s website. It has since withdrawn the item from the market and a company spokesman said, “The jacket was not designed by Topman. We apologize for any offence caused.”
The offending emblem was first spotted by an online shopper from Hove, East Sussex, who posted a review pointing out the insensitive use of the symbol.
“A friend of mine who wears punk-style clothing shared the link with me on Facebook,” the shopper told Britain’s Mirror. “When I looked more closely I saw the Nazi insignia. When I checked to see if Topman had published my review I noticed they had withdrawn the jacket from sale.”
“It’s a bit embarrassing for them,” he added.
The Odal is still used by neo-Nazi organisations and other supremacist groups. The symbol also appears on a pair of shorts sold by Topman, the Daily Mail reported.
