The U.S. House of Representatives on Monday voted to award the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor Congress can give civilians, to Israeli President Shimon Peres, Bloomberg News reported. Peres would be the first Israeli president to receive the honor.
Lawmakers approved the Peres honor by voice vote, with nearly 300 co-sponsors raising their hands in the 435-member House, and more than the required two-thirds majority to move forward. The measure now goes to the Senate for approval.
The House also voted to award the medal to golf legend Jack Nicklaus and five groups of war heroes.
