Jewish European Parliament Candidate Wakes to Swastika Spray Painted on His Door
by Shiryn Ghermezian
Swedish-Jewish European Parliament candidate Dror Feiler awoke on Friday to find a swastika spray painted on the front door of his Stockholm apartment, he told his Facebook followers.
“Good morning! I went out with the trash around 7 o’clock and something resembling a black crab was on my door. But it wasn’t a crab, it was a swastika,” the Left Party candidate wrote in Swedish.
Officials confirmed that a police report has been filed, Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet reported. The swastika spray painted on Feiler’s door has since been removed.
Commenting on the anti-Semitic graffiti, he wrote on Facebook, “Of course you get shocked by this kind of event. But perhaps even more, pissed.” Feiler, who is also a musician, added that he sees the intimidation as a threat to democracy.
“I find myself in the midst of a European election campaign and think that this is a direct threat to democracy. It is not acceptable,” he told Aftonbladet.
Friday’s incident is not the first time Feiler has faced anti-Semitic threats. Late at night on May 2, a group of men in a car shouted anti-Semitic slurs at him as he left a meeting in Malmö.
“Several people went in a car alongside me. They screamed ‘Jew bastard’ and ‘communist pig’ to me,” he told the paper.
Feiler emigrated from Israel in 1973 and renounced his Israeli citizenship in favor of Swedish citizenship. He is currently barred from entering Israel as a result of his participation in several Gaza bound flotillas, Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot reported. After he took part in the 2010 flotilla organized by the Turkish terror-tied IHH group, in which the Mavi Marmara ship sailed, Israel deported Feiler and slapped him with a 10-year entry ban. Last year, he appealed at the Jerusalem District Court to reverse the ban so he could tend to his sick, 90-year-old mother living in Israel.
