Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Monday reportedly called for killing arch-terrorist and Hamas leader, Khaled Mashaal.
“This is the only way to hurt Hamas,” Lieberman said, according to Channel 2 News.
The Hamas official is currently in safe refuge in Qatar, which backs the group.
Qatar “has become a problem for the entire world,” Lieberman told visiting Rwandan Foreign Minister, Louise Mushikiwabo, and slammed the Arabian Peninsula nation’s support for Hamas.
Qatar “is the economic backbone of the most extreme terrorist group, that is destabilizing the world in general and the Middle East in particular,” the FM said, according to Channel 2 News.
Lieberman said that Qatar “is the central actor in the conflict we are now facing with Hamas in Gaza, inasmuch as (Qatar) is funding Hamas and giving asylum to Khaled Mashaal.”
In 1997, Israel attempted, but failed to assassinate Mashaal, on the orders of then prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his first term in the position.
In his talks with his Rwandan counterpart, Lieberman reportedly pointed to the U.S. assassination of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan as an example of eliminating a sworn foe, according to The Jerusalem Post.
Noting that Qatar is a major backer of the Islamic terror group, the FM also called for banning the Al-Jazeera television network from Israel as a protest step.
He said his ministry was examining options for “not allowing it to broadcast anymore from Israel.”
The Qatari network “has abandoned even the perception of being a reliable news organization and broadcasts from Gaza and to the world anti-Israel incitement, lies and encouragement to the terrorists,” Lieberman charged.
