JNS.org – At a graduation ceremony on Thursday for Israeli Air Force members completing their pilots’ course, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Israel’s purchase of four Sa’ar-class warships from Germany.
“Today I am pleased to announce that three days ago we added an important component to our defensive force,” Netanyahu said at Hatzerim Airbase. “We purchased four new Sa’ar vessels, this is in addition to the submarines that are being built for the navy. I would like to thank German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her commitment and constant assistance to our security.”
Reports indicate that Israel will use the Sa’ar vessels to help protect its off-shore gas extraction facilities.
Netanyahu told the graduating pilots that they play a “decisive role” in combating terrorism.
“Our counter-terrorist actions are carried out in a wide circle, occasionally far from our borders,” he said. “The air force has a decisive role in implementing this policy on land, sea, and air. Our soldiers attack terrorist organizations and systematically disrupt the supply of war materiel sent to them, mainly by Iran and its proxies.”
