Egyptian state run media MENA has reported that Arab groups plan to block Jewish access to the site of legendary Rabbi Abu Hasir, ( Yaakov Abuhatzeira), located on Egyptian soil.
Hasira was a Moroccan rabbi who traveled by ship to the land of Palestine in 1879. Following the journey, Hasira died in Egypt. His tomb has been protected as an official antiquity site by the Egyptian government since the Camp David Accords.
According to Egypt Independent, Bloggers Against Abu Hasira, the Nasserist Trend, the Muslim Brotherhood, the Freedom and Justice Party, the April 6 Youth Movement and the Mohamed ElBaradei campaign signed the group statement.
The political landscape in Egypt is undergoing transformation following the fall of Hosni Mubarak and the landslide victories won by the Muslim Brotherhood in parliamentary elections. Yesterday the Muslim Brotherhood said they would extend it’s support for the current government by 6 months, while today, a liberal party threatened to boycott the last stage of parliamentary elections, due to “a religious competition”.
