Leading British Politician Says Country’s Jews ‘Definitely’ Don’t Need to Move

Prominent British politician William Hague, the Leader of the House of Commons, told members of Britain’s Jewish community on Monday that there is no need for them to leave the country amid fear of antisemitism following last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris, the UK’s Jewish News reported on Tuesday.
“We in the government and security services will work hard to keep everybody safe but that requires the participation of all communities, to give a strong lead and show that terrorism is the wrong way,” Hague said at an event held at the JW3 Jewish center. He reassured community members that they “definitely” don’t need to leave Britain.
High numbers of French Jews are considering leaving the country after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced moves to make it easier for European Jews to make aliyah following rising antisemitic tensions and attacks, including Friday’s murders at the HyperCacher kosher supermarket in Paris. Four Jews were killed during the terrorist siege and a cousin of one of the victims, Yohan Cohen, said she believes Jews are no longer safe in France, The Algemeiner previously reported.
But Hague said unity marches across France, such as the massive anti-terror rally held on Sunday, show that “hate can be defeated.”
“There is a real will among the population of this country, the people of France and many other European countries to defeat the mindless murderers of innocent people,” he explained. He also insisted it is “very sad” that Jewish institutions have to spend more on security than their non-Jewish counterparts.
