JNS.org – Ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech in Congress on Tuesday, U.S. media networks have been criticizing the Obama administration’s negotiation of a controversial deal with Iran.
On Monday, on the MSNBC morning talk show “Morning Joe,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif) told the hosts that he would attend Netanyahu’s Congress speech Tuesday despite having “strong reservations.” He added that he has been “encouraging people to go” and hear the speech, despite the controversy, and he was looking forward to hearing Netanyahu speak about the nuclear issue and Israel’s security.
Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic, also wrote in an article on Sunday that Netanyahu’s speech was important because it would force Obama to explain his conduct on Iran. Goldberg also said the speech would shift the onus to Obama, who would have to prove that he could deliver on his promise to prevent Iran’s nuclearization.
Goldberg also appeared on the panel at MSNBC, noting that Netanyahu’s appeal to right-wing voters stems from his “Churchillian pose that he is taking, that only he is strong enough to stand up to the President of the United States.”
Also on Monday, former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) and Michael Doran, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, wrote that Netanyahu’s speech has merits. In an article posted on Politico‘s website, they noted that “Obama has systematically worked to keep Congress in the dark. … The White House obviously prefers to hide the terms of the (Iran) deal until after it is signed, by which time it will be too late for anyone to mount serious opposition.”
Doran and Rogers said Netanyahu’s speech “is the act of a true and courageous friend.”
