Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghci said Iran can “snap back” changes it makes to its nuclear program under the final nuclear deal if it discovers that the world powers have breached their own commitments, Tasnim News Agency reported on Tuesday.
Aragchi was commenting on the fact that according to U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231, all previous Security Council sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program would be terminated when the JCPOA takes effect unless Iran is discovered to be violating the deal, in which case sanctions can be re-imposed.
Aragchi said that if Iran were the complaining party, then it will not wait for the Security Council’s decision after the initial stages of the review process, “because the Security Council’s decisions will relate to its own members.”
He said whenever Iran feels the other side has failed to honor its commitments, Iran would be able to reverse its nuclear program immediately.
“While such reversibility for them requires the case to be sent to the Security Council and going through those processes, for us, it could happen immediately and after 30 days,” Aragchi said.
