Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik has voted to adopt a boycott of Israeli products, the Iceland Magazine reported on Wednesday, handing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions activists another victory in the battle to isolate Israel economically.
The motion, put forward by retiring Social Democratic Alliance councilwoman Björk Vilhelmsdóttir, was adopted following a city council vote on Tuesday, the second day of the Jewish New Year or Rosh Hashanah, according to the report. It was Vilhelmsdóttir’s last initiative before retiring.
The memorandum calls on Reykjavik to suspend purchases of any goods manufactured in Israel, “as long as the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories continues,” according to the report.
An explanation provided with the memorandum calls the boycott a symbolic act showing solidarity with Palestinian rights and opposing the “Israeli policy of apartheid” against Palestinians, according to the report.
While the initiative singles out Israel for human rights abuses worthy of a boycott, Sóley Tómasdóttir of the Left Green Alliance said the council could adopt other boycotts against additional states it deems guilty of human rights abuses.
A local attorney argued that the move was illegal, saying it amounted to discrimination. Similar efforts by some groups in the U.S. to adopt an Israel boycott have been met with lawsuits and threats of litigation by critics who say a boycott of Israel illegally discriminates against individuals and companies based on nationality.
