The father of Ziv Mizrahi, the 18-year-old IDF private killed on Monday in a stabbing attack at a gas station north of Jerusalem, is no stranger to bereavement born of terrorism, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Tuesday.
As hundreds of people gathered Tuesday at the Mt. Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem to pay their last respects to the soldier, a driver in a unit that operates surveillance balloons, his father, Doron Mizrahi, could barely contain himself as he wept about having lost his brother to a terrorist attack 12 years ago, and was now parting from his beloved son.
Indeed, Alon Mizrahi was murdered in September 2003 while trying to prevent a Palestinian suicide bomber from entering Jerusalem’s Café Hillel, where he worked as a security guard. The terrorist then detonated his explosive belt, killing Alon and six other people. Without Alon’s intervention, the death toll could have been much higher.
Ziv, too, acted bravely, according to eyewitnesses and his father, who recounted through his tears at the funeral that before Ziv succumbed to his stab wounds, he shot the assailant. “With a knife stuck in his heart, did he give up? No! He fired at the terrorist,” Doron Mizrahi wailed.
