BBC Sport deleted a Twitter post with an offensive reference to a Spanish soccer player after being accused of promoting antisemitism, the Irish newspaper Independent reported on Saturday.

The deleted tweet was about the Middlesbrough English soccer club signing Spanish player Enrique Sola, who goes by the nickname “Kike.” The team has another player, Enrique Garcia Martinez, who shares the same nickname.

The tweet read, “Two Kikes… there’s only two Kikes. And now they both play for #Boro.”

Though both names are pronounced “Kee-Kay,” rather than “kike,” an antisemitic slur, BBC Sport received backlash from Twitter users, including from one who wrote, “This tweet basically sums up Nazism.”

“At first glance, this is incredibly antisemitic,” wrote another. Yet another said, “You do realize ‘kike’ is a particularly offensive term for a Jewish person don’t you? Even with the story it’s poor form.”
