Six days after the terrorist attack at a West Bank supermarket took the life of off-duty IDF staff sergeant Yanai Weissman, surveillance footage was released revealing his bravery in the face of two knife-wielding Palestinian teenagers, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Thursday.
The video also shows Weissman’s last moments with his wife, Yael, and four-month-old daughter, Neta, as they enter the Rami Levi store in the Sha’ar Binyamin industrial zone to do their grocery shopping for Shabbat.
Slightly earlier on the tape, three youths are seen entering the store. On their heels is a suspicious security guard, entering behind them for fear – he later said – that they were planning on stealing something.
The guard is seen on the video searching for the three boys and finding one of them, whom he detains and later removes from the store.
The same guard continues looking for the other two, who at this point had reached the area where fresh baked goods are sold. Concerned that he is still on the lookout for them, they remain in place for several minutes.
Weissman, meanwhile, is walking through the aisles, selecting items from the shelves.
As soon as the two boys decide that the coast is clear, they begin to seek victims for their planned stabbing attack. It is then that the 21-year-old Weissman detects them and approaches, unarmed. Trying to stop what he saw was about to happen, he sustained the stab wounds from which he would later die in a Jerusalem hospital. In the process, however, he enabled others to subdue the terrorists, thereby preventing a much more serious attack.
