The Israeli navy completed an exercise to simulate an Islamic State seajacking early Thursday morning, Israel’s Channel 2 reported.
The drill, which took place in the Red Sea, included confronting rocket- and missile-fire launched from the direction of Egypt into Israel and the seajacking of civilian boats by ISIS terrorists.
The nearly 24-hour exercise involved extensive forces, among them the IDF Navy’s routine security squadron in Eilat, and missile boats. Members of the elite IDF naval special ops and counterterrorism unit, Shayetet 13, who also took part in the drill, were responsible for rescuing hostages who – the scenario envisioned – had been wounded by the terrorists.
According to the IDF, though an ISIS seajacking and hostage-taking was the focus of the drill, other scenarios were also played out, such as a terrorist infiltration into Israel and an attack on Israel Navy boats.
The IDF also told Channel 2 that exercises such as this one are conducted twice a year, and each time a different area of the country is selected for training. Wednesday’s drill focused on the south of the country due to a recent rise in ISIS activity in the Sinai.
