Aerial footage from what has come to be considered the most significant battle of the Second Lebanon War – in which Israeli hero, Maj. Roi Klein, who jumped on a live grenade to save his comrades, was killed — was released by the IDF for the first time on Sunday.
The battle over Bint Jbeil took place on July 26, 2006, during the third week of the war when members of Battalion 51 of the IDF’s Golani Brigade fought Hezbollah terrorists.
According to Walla News, despite the loss of eight Israeli officers and soldiers during the battle, members of the battalion put up a brave fight against the terrorist group, which had been showering rockets and missiles from Lebanon into Israeli cities prior to and during the war, managing to kill more than 30 Hezbollah terrorists until they surrendered.
The men killed in the battle, aside from Klein – the deputy commander of the Golani Brigade who became famous for his yelling the Hebrew prayer “Shema Yisrael” (“Hear O’ Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one”), before throwing himself onto the grenade – were: Cpt. Alex Shwartzman, Lt. Amichai Merchavia, St. Sgt Shimon Dahan, St. Sgt. Idan Cohen, Sgt. Shimon Adega, Sgt. Assaf Namer and St. Sgt. Ohad Klausner.
The footage below was released as Israel marks the 10th anniversary of the war.
