A Lebanese entertainment company came under fire after posting an ad featuring the image of an Israeli soldier, the Guardian reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, Virgin Megastore’s Ticketing Box Office posted the image of an IDF soldier looking through binoculars on its social media accounts. Accompanying the photo was the tagline, “Keep your eyes on us, o hero.”
The ad was meant to serve as a tribute to the Lebanese army on the 10th anniversary of the Second War in Lebanon.
The ad quickly went viral, with Twitter- and Facebook-users quick to mock the image and slam the company for posting a photo of an Israeli soldier, the report said.
The firm operating Virgin’s Lebanese social media accounts responded by taking down the image and issuing an apology.
“We, the company Softimpact, in charge of Virgin Ticketing Box Office’s page on Facebook, apologize for the picture which was accidentally posted, and regret the systematic campaign launched against us over this post, which was supposed to salute the brave Lebanese Army on its holiday,” a statement posted on Virgin’s Facebook page said.
The statement denounced those who called into question the company’s “patriotism” and concluded, “Great people plan, big people lead, heroes are victorious, and cowards take advantage, long live the Lebanese army and long live Lebanon.”
The 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah lasted 34 days. Some 1,200 people in Lebanon — mainly civilians — were killed in the conflict. Israel suffered 160 casualties, mostly soldiers.
