JNS.org – Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations said last week that media companies should stop facilitating antisemitic rhetoric, the Associated Press reported.
Danny Danon made this comment on Wednesday, while addressing the High-Level Forum on Anti-Semitism, which was sponsored by the US, Canada, Israel and the European Union, following the first UN General Assembly meeting on antisemitism.
Danon said 63 percent of all antisemitic tweets incite violence against Jews, but only one in 10 is removed.
“We are living in a new era and we face a new kind of antisemitism,” Danon said. “Online communities of hate spread lies about Israel and conspiracy theories about the Jews to millions around the world. All they need is a wireless connection, a Facebook account, and a deep hatred for the Jewish people.”
Danon also cited Google, which recently removed a program being used to identify and target Jews online. However, Danon said, “By the time it was shut down, it had a vast database of names.”
US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power echoed Danon’s sentiments, and called for “more effective tools to monitor and confront antisemitism online and in social media.” But she also insisted that freedom of speech must be protected.
“We must insist on maintaining a distinction between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitism,” she said, asserting that “the lines between the two are often blurred.”
