JNS.org – The American Jewish Committee (AJC) and the Board of Deputies of British Jews have signed an association accord, an official step beyond their previous collaborations, the leading Jewish advocacy groups announced Thursday.
“Our organizations share a vision and commitment to ensuring the well-being of Jews worldwide and for the state of Israel through global advocacy,” said AJC CEO David Harris. “From our many past joint efforts, we have only the highest admiration and appreciation for the tremendous work of the Board of Deputies. We look forward to deepening and expanding our cooperation.”
Board of Deputies Chief Executive Gillian Merron said she expects AJC and the British group to “make the most of this opportunity toward our common goal of protecting the well-being of the Jewish people both here in the UK and internationally.”
Merron added that the recent Brexit vote for Britain to leave the European Union “is undoubtedly going to have implications but also opportunities for Britain’s role in the world,” like this formalized agreement with the AJC.
Earlier this year, the Board of Deputies partnered in the AJC’s Mayors United Against Antisemitism campaign, in which more than 500 US and European mayors, including the recently elected mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, pledged to combat the rise of antisemitism.
