Oberlin Professor Dismissed Over Antisemitic Facebook Posts

JNS.org – Ohio’s Oberlin College announced Wednesday that it has dismissed a professor over a series of antisemitic and anti-Israel Facebook posts. The Cleveland Jewish News first reported the dismissal Tuesday night.
Assistant Professor Joy D. Karega, who taught rhetoric and composition, had been on suspension and under investigation since August, after years’ worth of her Facebook posts perpetuating Jew-hatred were brought to light. Her hate-filled comments included peddling the conspiracy theories that Zionists and Israeli Jews were behind 9/11, the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine in 2014 and the attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015.
Karega had also shared a picture of Jewish banking magnate Jacob Rothschild with the caption, “We own your news, the media, your oil and your government,” and an image suggesting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is behind the bloodthirsty terror group ISIS.
Following the dismissal, Oberlin released a statement saying that given Karega’s “repeated refusal to acknowledge and remedy her misconduct,” her “continued presence undermines the mission and values of Oberlin’s academic community.”
“Thus, any sanction short of dismissal is insufficient and the Board of Trustees is compelled to take this most serious action,” Oberlin said.
Hours later, Karega took to Facebook to announce that she plans to “aggressively challenge what this college has done to me and defend my rights,” and threatened litigation.
