Following Monday’s attack in Southern France where a gunman killed 4 and critically wounded another at a Jewish school, Israeli officials are responding.
“The shooting at the Jewish school is a red light for the entire Jewish people the world over. The world’s countries should unite to fight against attacks on Jews and to work together to destroy the seeds of anti-Semitic terror that are being sown around the world,” said Member of Knesset, Danny Dannon.
Dannon, who heads the Parliamentary Committee for Diaspora affairs, says he will hold an emergency session on Tuesday to review the shooting in France.
“The attack on the French Jewish school is shocking and painful. Israel and the Jewish people are partners in the struggle against anti-Semitism and hate crimes,” Israel’s opposition leader Tzipi Livni said.
From inside France, the reaction has been strong as well.
“We have no doubt that the attack was anti-Semitic – It is certain. Killing children from close range just because they are Jewish is an unimaginable horror. These are innocent children,” said Meir Hebib, speaking on behalf of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions.
“Whatever happens, faced with this kind of toll, we can say that the French Republic as a whole has been hit by this appalling tragedy,” said French President Nicholas Sarkozy.
In line with most of the comments coming from Jewish and Israeli leaders around the world, Israel’s Interior Ministry expressed it’s confidence in the French government to deal with this attack effectively.
“We are following with great shock reports coming from Toulouse and we trust the French authorities will solve this crime and bring those responsible to justice,” said a spokesman for Israel’s Interior Ministry.
