JNS.org – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of “the resurgent antisemitism…in many parts of the world” in his Wednesday address to Australian Jewry.
“We have a battle against those who seek to demonize our people…It is something that we need to fight together,” Netanyahu said, in his speech at the Sydney Central Synagogue, attended by current Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, as well as former leaders John Howard and Tony Abbot, along with hundreds of members of the Jewish community.
“This is important in Europe. It’s important in America. It’s very important that President Trump took a strong stand against antisemitism,” he noted. “It’s important that we all continue to do so in the years ahead.”
“I want to salute this Jewish community, which is unusually committed to the state of Israel, to the Jewish people. You’ve shown it time and time again,” the premier said.
Netanyahu also praised his counterpart for supporting Israel on the world stage.
“I salute you, Malcolm Turnbull, and the governments of Australia who have stood up time and time again against [Israel’s] demonization, including recently,” he said, referring to the prime minister’s criticism of the 2016 United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements.
Netanyahu ended by inviting everyone to come visit the Jewish state.
“I want all of you to come to Israel. I want you to visit your friends and your families, I want you to walk the streets of the old city in Jerusalem and the Golan,” he said. “We are part of you, you are part of us.”
