US President Donald Trump has received across-the-board praise from top Israeli political figures for his decision on Thursday to launch a Tomahawk missile strike against a military air base in Syria in response to the suspected use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime earlier this week.

“In both word and action, President Trump sent a strong and clear message today that the use and spread of chemical weapons will not be tolerated,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. “Israel fully supports President Trump’s decision and hopes that this message of resolve in the face of the Assad regime’s horrific actions will resonate not only in Damascus, but in Tehran, Pyongyang and elsewhere.”

On Friday, US Vice President Mike Pence called Netanyahu and thanked him, on behalf of Trump, for Israel’s support of the American strike.

Israel was notified in advance of the impending US military action, something which Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said was “further proof of the strength of the relationship and depth of the connection between Israel and its largest ally.”

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin stated, “In the face of the terrible use of chemical weapons against innocent civilians, the clear and determined steps of the US administration and military under the leadership of President Trump, constitute a fitting and appropriate response to such unthinkable brutality.”

“In acting as it has,” Rivlin continued, “the United States serves as an example to the entire free world, which must support any step required to bring the atrocities in Syria to an end.”

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said, “Assad’s murderous regime continues to cross all lines. The US strike sent a strong message that this will no longer stand. The actions by our American allies serve as a beacon of morality for the entire international community.”

The heads of Israel’s main opposition parties also welcomed the US strike. Zionist Union head Isaac Herzog said it sent an “important message to the Damascus butcher.”

“Timely and on target,” he tweeted.

“If the civilized world stands by while children are gassed to death it’s not civilized,” he went on to say. “There are times when use of force is the moral act.”

Meretz chief Zehava Gal-On tweeted, “We must not stand idly by when crimes against humanity occur. The strike against Assad is an important step, but its significance will be measured by the extent of America’s commitment to protect civilians going forward.”
