JCC and Church Vandalized With Swastikas in Northern Virginia

JNS.org – A JCC and a nearby church in Fairfax County, Va., were vandalized on Tuesday with swastikas and derogatory language.
Fairfax County police received reports that graffiti had been sprayed on buildings at the JCC of Northern Virginia. Approximately an hour and a half after the initial report, authorities were notified that similar graffiti was discovered at Little River United Church of Christ, just a few hundred yards away from the JCC.
Tawny Wright, a spokesperson for the county’s police department, said the vandalism occurred between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., and that police are reviewing surveillance footage of both incidents.
The JCC’s executive director, Jeff Dannick, said the vandalism was “particularly painful” because it occurred during the Passover holiday, The Washington Post reported.
“It’s a painful reminder of how ugly and dangerous the world can be, but also how we can overcome it,” said Dannick.
At the church, a swastika was sprayed on the prayer schedule, and a sign advocating against anti-Muslim hatred was vandalized with the message “Jesus knows no traitors.” Pastor David Lindsey said the vandalism did not surprise him. The Little River Church, founded in 1955 as a racially integrated church, is known for promoting tolerance of other religions and the LGBTQ community.
The vandalism follows scores of bomb threats against JCCs and the desecration of Jewish cemeteries throughout the first quarter of 2017.
