President Donald Trump reiterated on Thursday his view that an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement is an achievable goal for his administration.
“I want to see peace with Israel and the Palestinians,” he told Reuters in an interview. “There’s no reason there’s not peace between Israel and the Palestinians — none whatsoever.”
Trump declined to answer a question from Reuters about whether he would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, saying, “Ask me in a month on that.”
As reported by The Algemeiner earlier this week, planning is underway for a potential visit by Trump to Israel in late May. Trump’s stop in the Jewish state might fall around Jerusalem Day (May 23), when Israel will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reunification of the holy city during the 1967 Six-Day War.
After he was elected president last November, Trump said he would “love to be the one who made peace with Israel and the Palestinians,” calling it “the ultimate deal.”
“As a deal maker, I’d like to do…the deal that can’t be made,” he said. “And do it for humanity’s sake.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Trump at the White House in mid-February and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will do the same on Wednesday.
At his joint press conference with Netanyahu, Trump deferred to the Israelis and the Palestinians regarding what a peace deal should look like, saying, “So I’m looking at a two-state [solution] and one-state [solution] and I like the one that both parties like…I can live with either one.”
