JNS.org – The World Jewish Congress (WJC) and the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities have slammed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s recent comments praising World War II-era Hungarian leader and Nazi ally Miklos Horthy.
“The horrors that Admiral Horthy inflicted on the Jewish community of Hungary by stripping them of their rights and their humanity, and his role in the deportation and murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews, can never be excused,” WJC President Ronald Lauder said.
Hours before he had hosted Lauder in the Hungarian Parliament, Orban referred to Horthy and other Hungarian leaders as “exceptional statesmen” for leading the country in the wake of the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s collapse following World War I.
Andras Heiszler, president of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities, said Horthy’s antisemitism “cannot be put as an example for future generations.”
