Israel views the freshly-discovered permanent Iranian base established outside of the Syrian capital of Damascus as a manifestation of the Islamic Republic’s growing military power in the war-torn country, the Hebrew news site Walla reported on Wednesday.
Referring to Tuesday’s revelation of the base by Fox News, unnamed Israeli defense officials told Walla, “These are not new buildings, but old ones now occupied by Iran.”
The sources declined to elaborate for Walla on the scope of Iran’s military presence in Syria, but the report said it was likely there were other similar bases in the country.
The Tehran regime’s modus operandi, according to the Walla report, is to equip and man existing Syrian military bases with Iranian weapons systems and personnel.
“Iran is not able to hide its activities in Syria,” the sources said. “Iran would have been happy if no one knew about its bases.”
The key question now, the Walla report noted, is how Israel will act and if it will destroy the newly-revealed base in the near future.
