New US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that President Donald Trump had not yet taken a decision on whether to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal but was not likely to keep to it without substantial changes.
Pompeo told a news conference after a NATO meeting of foreign ministers that the Trump administration was “unlikely to stay in that deal past this May” without a modification of the deal.
Asked about Germany’s failure to spend at least two percent of its economic output on defense as stated in the military alliance’s guidelines, Pompeo called on Berlin to “meet the goals that they agreed to.”
Also speaking after the meeting, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called on the Afghan Taliban to accept an offer by President Ashraf Ghani for peace talks “without preconditions.”
Ghani made the offer at the start of an international conference aimed at creating a platform for peace talks.
On Iraq, Stoltenberg said NATO allies agreed on the details of a 700-personnel-strong training mission that should be approved by leaders at an alliance summit on July 11-12 that Trump is set to attend.
