‘We’re Not Going to Sacrifice Our Beliefs,’ Says Orthodox Jewish Manager of Racehorse American Pharoah

The Orthodox Jewish Zayat family, who own the Triple Crown-winning racehorse American Pharaoh, will never compromise their religion in order to succeed in a race, the New York Post reported on Saturday.
“My parents always say, ‘We’re not going to sacrifice our beliefs because of a horse race,’” Teaneck, NJ, native Justin Zayat, 26, said. “We stick to our morals.”
Where there are races, which are held on Saturdays and conflict with Shabbat, the Zayat family often stay in a hotel about a mile away from the track and walk together to the scene of the race.
American Pharoah is the first horse to win the Triple Crown since 1978 and has brought in more than $8 million for the Zayat family, according to the New York Post. Justin is vice president of Zayat Stables, headquartered in Hackensack, NJ, and started by his father, Ahmed Zayat. He manages around 200 horses that are trained all around the country.
The family’s new racing horse is Solomini, a two-year-old chestnut colt who finished third at the Arkansas Derby on April 14.
