Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Shi’a terrorist group based in Lebanon, continues to be “a grave threat to the security of the US and its partners and allies,” a statement from the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs declared on Friday.
The statement — issued after President Donald Trump on Thursday signed into law the Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Amendments Act of 2018 — highlighted Hezbollah’s provocative actions in the Middle East.
“It’s amassing missiles along Israel’s borders, helping the Assad regime butcher and torture innocent civilians in Syria and threatening US forces in Iraq,” the statement said.
The statement mourned the fact that “thirty-five years ago this week, 241 Americans lost their lives in the horrific Beirut barracks bombing.”
The statement underlined that it was Hezbollah — with the support and direction of the Iranian government — that “carried out this deadly attack.”
“In the years since, the terror group has continued to spread death and destruction,” the statement continued. “This includes the suicide bombing of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) in Buenos Aires [in July 1994] that killed 85 people in one of the deadliest antisemitic acts since World War II.”
The new legislation, meanwhile, “imposes tough new sanctions on those who provide weapons to Hezbollah.”
It will target “Hezbollah’s fundraising and recruiting efforts — including through innovative crowdsourcing techniques — and gives the administration additional tools to respond to Hezbollah’s global criminal network,” the Foreign Affairs Committee’s statement added.
