Ireland’s top diplomat has voiced opposition to legislation advanced by his country’s Senate earlier this week that would ban the import of Israeli settlement goods.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said he would “not be bounced into anything I believe is the wrong thing to do,” The Irish Times reported.
“We do not believe it to be legally sound or capable of being implemented,” Coveney — a member of Ireland’s ruling center-right Fine Gael party — noted of the “Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill.”
To become a law, the bill would still require further approvals from the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as the signature of the president.
Despite his opposition to the bill, Coveney emphasized, “Palestinians and the Palestinian National Authority have strong advocates in both Houses, and I am one of them.”
The Irish government would continue to try to “protect Palestinians and support a sustainable two-state solution for both Israel and Palestine,” he added.
