Google Doodle Honors Birthday of Nobel Prize-Winning Jewish Poet Who Fled Nazi Germany

Monday’s Google Doodle honored what would have been the 127th birthday of a Jewish poet who fled Nazi Germany and wrote about her experiences after World War II.
Nelly Sachs — born on December 10, 1891, into a Jewish family in Berlin — started writing poetry as an adolescent and even had some of her work published in German periodicals, in addition to a collection of stories called Legends and Tales, according to Google.
Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf, who became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1909, corresponded with Sachs and petitioned the Swedish royal family to help her and her mother leave Germany at the start of World War II.
After they escaped to Sweden, Sachs wrote detailed poems and plays about the aftermath of the war and her family members who died in concentration camps. She described the “metaphors” in her poetry as “wounds,” but her work also included themes of transformation and forgiveness, according to Google.
Sachs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, which she shared with Israeli writer S.Y. Agnon, in 1966, and she won many other honors during her lifetime, including the 1965 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
