The European Parliament passed a resolution on Thursday urging EU member states to take steps to identify and recover art and other cultural items looted by the Nazis during World War II.
The measure — approved by a 544-62 margin, with 20 abstentions — noted that more than 100,000 of the approximately 650,000 pieces of art stolen by the Nazis remained missing today.
Gideon Taylor — the chair of operations of the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO) — welcomed the initiative, stating on Wednesday, “Ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, this is a powerful declaration of support by the European Parliament for Holocaust survivors and their families in their decades-long quest for justice from the largest cultural theft in history.”
“WJRO has long called for heightened provenance research and removal of the many obstacles that survivors and their families face in recovering what was so wrongfully taken from them,” he added.
