The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has expressed “deep concern” over a recent antisemitic incident in which a Jew in New York state was told by a co-worker, “You’re in the gas chamber now.”
The incident reportedly took place in Ulster County, where a Jewish woman was harassed by a fellow employee. He allegedly turned off the lights while she was in a produce cooler and said, “You’re in the gas chamber now,” before calling her a “f**king Jew.”
The man was fired and arrested by police on a charge of aggravated harassment.
The ADL’s New York/New Jersey regional director, Evan R. Bernstein, stated, “This alleged act of anti-Semitic intimidation, invoking the horrors of the Holocaust, is truly appalling and should not be tolerated in any context.”
“At a time when anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise in New York State, we must remain vigilant and continue to call out and condemn all acts of hate, each and every time,” he added.
