Al-Qaeda in Yemen, also known as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, is recruiting suicide bombers for “operations that make for great killing and slaughtering of the enemies of Islam”, and their advertisements on jihadi internet forums list Americans as the highest priority targets, followed by Israeli, French, and British citizens, in order of importance.
“Their identity must be, according to priority, American, Israeli, French and British,” reads an al-Qaeda recruitment ad, which was placed on a jihadi forum recently. Al-Fidaa, Shmoukh al-Islam and Honein are some of the forums used by Islamist groups around the world for recruitment.
Consistent with al-Qaeda’s support for terrorists who act on their own, the advertisement calls for “lone wolf” attacks.
“It is clear now that the individual jihad, or what is called the lone wolf, has become more widespread and its features have started showing — in summary, it is a complete jihadist operation to be carried out by a single bomber,” reads AQAP’s recruitment text.
A U.S. drone strike killed al-Qaeda’s second in command, Abu Yahya al Libi, earlier this week in Pakistan, while Secretary of State Hilary Clinton recently noted the terrorist group’s geographic reach is becoming more “diverse”.
“The aim of this training is to continue with our brothers who are seeking to carry out operations that make for great killing and slaughtering of the enemies of Islam,” al-Qaeda recently wrote on a jihadi forum.
