The Palestinian Authority (PA) is opposing a moment of silence at the London Olympics to mark the 40th anniversary of the Palestinian “Black September” terrorist group’s killing of 11 Israeli team members in Munich, in 1972, Palestinian Media Watch reports.
On July 25, the PA’s daily publication wrote, in a headline, that sports “are meant for peace, not for racism.” Jibril Rajoub, President of the Palestinian Olympic Committee, wrote International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge thanking him for not granting Israel’s request of a moment of silence at the opening ceremony.
“Sports are a bridge to love, interconnection, and spreading of peace among nations; it must not be a cause of division and spreading of racism between them [nations],” Rajoub, wrote in the letter, which appeared in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida.
The PA publication does not refer to the Munich murders as terrorism, simply calling the events of 1972 “the Munich Operation.”
