Two explosions shook the southern city of Eilat on Wednesday night, startling residents but causing no injuries or damage, Israel Hayom reported. The explosions are believed to be the result of Grad rockets fired into Israel from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
The explosions halted a concert by popular Israeli singer Eyal Golan at Eilat’s southern beach and concert-goers were asked to leave out of concern for their safety. The explosions were heard away from the main tourist areas, and the city’s beachfront promenade was packed with holidaymakers on Wednesday night as usual.
Rocket fire from Sinai into the Eilat region has become increasingly common in recent years. On June 16, two Grad rockets landed near Mitzpe Ramon and Ovda. Islamic terrorist operatives in Sinai are suspected of being responsible for these rocket attacks and on Wednesday, a statement from the Salafi jihadist terrorist group in Sinai claimed other jihadist groups, which it did not name, were behind past attacks on Sinai’s gas pipeline that delivers gas from Egypt to Israel and Jordan as well as the recent rocket fire on Israel.
