One day after being found guilty of violating a California civil rights law for attempting to throw a Jewish group out of her hotel, Tehmina Adaya went against judicial orders and chose not to show up in court as the jury deliberates over punitive damages.
“Supposedly she’s had some sort of breakdown but she’s produced no doctor’s note as of yet,” a source close to the matter told The Algemeiner. “The reason she’s not showing up is because then she has to testify about her assets.”
The court case, which is now in its punitive phase, stems from a 2010 incident at a Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Young Leadership Division fundraiser, held at the Shangri-La Hotel, which is owned by Adaya. The event was organized to raise funds for the children and siblings of fallen Israeli soldiers to come to the United States. However, when Adaya witnessed the event taking place in the hotel’s pool area, she ordered it to be shut down.
“Get the f-king Jews out of my pool”, Adaya, who is an American-Muslim of Pakistani descent, said at the pool that day, according to sworn testimony given during the trial.
In their decision on Wednesday, the jury unanimously found Adaya guilty of violating California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act,.
“Every single juror agreed that it was a violation of the civil rights act,” a person with knowledge of the case who requested anonymity told The Algemeiner.
The case is expected to be wrapped up shortly, regardless of whether Adaya shows up in court or not.
According to a source who was in court on Thursday in Santa Monica, Adaya’s legal team “brought in two accountants who essentially knew nothing.”
