England’s youth soccer team beat Israel 3-0 in Wednesday’s first semifinal of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship at the Adjarabet Arena in Georgia, bringing the Israeli squad’s fairytale run to a close.
Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White gave England the lead in the 42nd minute, three minutes before half-time, with a goal that was followed by another from Manchester City forward Cole Palmer. Substitute Cameron Archer scored his team’s third goal in the 90th minute while Israel was unable to pull off a single goal, despite many attempts.
Israel’s under-21 soccer team had an impressive run in the tournament, including scoring a stunning 1-0 win against the Czech Republic, which secured their spot in the quarterfinals, and then eliminating tournament co-hosts Georgia in a 4-3 penalty shootout in the quarterfinals. Israel’s youth soccer team had never previously made it beyond the group stage of the U-21 competition and even though they are not proceeding to their finals, the team has already qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics and will participate in the international competition for the first time in 48 years.
England previously beat Israel 2-0 in the group stage of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and will compete in the finals on Saturday against Spain, which crushed Ukraine 5-1 in Wednesday’s second semifinal in Bucharest. England, who have yet to concede a goal in the tournament, will be in the finals for the first time since 2009 and are hoping to win the competition for the third time following victories in 1982 and 1984.
Spain has won three European Under-21 Championship titles in the last six tournaments.
