The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has asked for the public’s help in locating the son of one of its professors who was present at the Kibbutz Nir Oz, located near the Gaza border, when Hamas terrorists launched a terrorist assault there on Saturday.

Prof. Jonathan Dekel-Chen, an American who immigrated to Israel at age 18, said the status of his 35-year-old son, Sagui Dekel-Chen remains unknown. Sagui is a husband and father of two. His wife is currently pregnant with their third child.

“Hebrew University strongly calls upon international organizations and humanitarian groups to step forward and provide their support in the efforts to locate Sagui,” Hebrew University said in a statement on Wednesday. “Professor Dekel-Chen and his family are enduring an unfathomable ordeal, desperately seeking any information that might lead them to their son.”

The university noted that Sagui did converse with others on the kibbutz during the attack but has not been heard from since about 7:00 AM on that day, adding, “Regrettably, no eyewitnesses can attest to his whereabouts or well-being since that moment.”

The White House said on Wednesday that 17 Americans are still unaccounted for and possibly hostages of Hamas following the Palestinian terrorist group’s invasion over the weekend.

Since Hamas’ initial terror onslaught, more than 1,000 Israelis have been killed, while thousands more have been injured and dozens taken back to Gaza as hostages.
