Famed human rights activist Garry Kasparov on Wednesday framed the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas as part of a larger global struggle between freedom and tyranny, arguing the latter believes now is the time to destroy the Jewish state.
“It’s a war of freedom and democracy against tyranny and dictatorships, and Israel has been fighting this war for a long time,” Kasparov said on stage at The Algemeiner’s 10th annual J100 Gala. “Our enemies have not lost hopes to eradicate Jewishness from history.”
Kasparov, a former world chess champion who grew up in the Soviet Union, described Hamas and those who seek Israel and the Jewish people’s demise as the “Nazis of modern times,” outlining the nature of the threat.
“This is not an ordinary challenge,” he said. “This is not an ordinary war. They believe that it’s a time to have the decisive blow to Jewry around the world and heart of Jewishness, the state of Israel … There’s so much work to be done.”
