The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are closing in on Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and have nearly captured him twice in recent days during ground operations in southern Gaza, according to an unsourced report from Israel’s Channel 12.
Sinwar, who runs Hamas in the Gaza Strip, is part of a group of higher-ups who planned the Palestinian terror group’s Oct. 7 massacre in Israel.
Last week, a senior US official said of Sinwar, “It’s safe to say his days are numbered … He has American blood on his hands.” The official also pledged that “justice will be served.”
In recent days, IDF forces have broken through the Khan Younis section of the southern Gaza Strip, taking control of central positions and infrastructure of Hamas — including its leader’s vacation house in the area — according to an announcement on Sunday.
In a separate statement, the IDF announced the completion of the occupation of Jabaliya in northern Gaza and the killing of “hundreds of terrorists” and the arrest of nearly 500. “We dismantled the operational capabilities of the Northern Gaza Brigade,” the IDF said on Tuesday afternoon.
IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari announced that the military deployed an additional brigade to southern Gaza’s Khan Younis.
“In southern Gaza, in the Khan Younis area, we are expanding our operations, and deepening it,” Hagari said. “We added a full brigade and additional combat engineering forces for operations in the area, to improve our operations.”
