"Underemployed" premieres Tuesday, October 16 at 10 pm ET on MTV.
After focusing on the teen demographic with a number of scripted shows about high schoolers, MTV is now tapping into the post college grad realm. The channel’s new series “Underemployed” is set in Chicago and follows a group of five friends, who, at college graduation, had lofty goals and big dreams.
One of the fab five is non-other than Israeli actress Inbar Lavi, who plays Raviva, in one of the series’ lead roles, after numerous guest appearances on such high profile prime time shows as “Entourage” and “CSI: Miami”.
The 25 year old Lavi’s character is a musician who shows up unexpectedly with a ‘bun in the oven,’ as she enters the real world with her friends in their challenging post-college life. “Representing my character who is a musician is an extreme experience”, she told us in an interview on the red carpet at last month’s MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles, “And she manages to combine her surprising new role in life as a mother in a very cool way”.
DC: What can you tell us about the concept of the show?
IL: “The show follows the group trying to make it after their college years and wanting to basically take over the world. But soon after they find themselves stuck in a mindless job, without real purpose. The plot-line embodies what every 20 something has to deal with nowadays, not to mention the economic difficulties in recent years that make it extra tough to professionally and individually grow”.
DC: As an Israeli, born and raised, how do you think foreign audiences will relate?
IL: “Most of my friends back in Israel have to endure a workplace that is not necessarily their field of expertise and just do it to get by, not to mention the rate of unemployment. The economical crisis has effects on all of us, no matter where we are in the world”.
DC: And how is life in the US?
IL: “I have been living in LA for seven years now and I can’t really complain. I just got back from a visit to Israel, had some gigs and I always enjoy going back. I always support Israel and even tonight I am wearing a dress by Israeli fashion designer Alon Livne. I feel that I’m living the dream and I couldn’t be happier”.
